The Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina is a vibrant and bustling metropolis that offers its residents plenty to do. From museums and galleries, to great restaurants and entertainment venues, there’s no shortage of things to explore in this part of the Tar Heel State. But what about sports? Professional Teams in Raleigh/Durham

The most well-known professional team in the area is probably the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. The ‘Canes have called Raleigh home since 1997, when they moved from Hartford, Connecticut. They’ve had some successes over the years, making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals twice (2002 & 2006), where they won their first championship in 2006. They play their home games at PNC Arena, which also hosts concerts and family shows throughout the year.

The area is also home to two minor league baseball teams: The Durham Bulls and Carolina Mudcats. The former is affiliated with the MLB Tampa Bay Rays organization and plays its games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park; while the latter are affiliated with Cincinnati Reds organization, who play their games at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. Both teams draw large crowds during their respective seasons (April-September).  Finally, soccer fans can enjoy watching local USL League One team North Carolina FC play at WakeMed Soccer Park located in nearby Cary. 

College Teams in Raleigh/Durham

The Triangle also has some great college teams representing various universities throughout North Carolina. For football fans, there’s NC State Wolfpack (NCSU) playing at Carter-Finley Stadium; Duke Blue Devils (Duke) playing at Wallace Wade Stadium; and UNC Tarheels (UNC) playing at Kenan Memorial Stadium—all three schools are members of NCAA Division I FBS Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Basketball fans can check out NC State Wolfpack men’s basketball team playing at PNC Arena; Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium; or UNC Tarheels men’s basketball team playing at Dean Smith Center—all three programs are members of ACC as well and perennially ranked among nation’s best collegiate programs year after year.
